Hi,
I can remember way back in the late 1930, just before WW2 we all would go to my great grandmother and great grandfather's house for Christmas dinner,The house would be packed with relations, just as well it had three story's, we would get there the day before so my Mother and Father could help my Grandmother with the cooking, as Great grandmother was not steady on her feet. I can remember the very large chicken being cooked. They let me put a gold coin into the Christmas cake mixture, even let me put my finger around the cake dish( it realy tasted good.) Then it was off to bed, with stocking hanging on the bottom of the bed. (Poor Santa, there would have been at least 12 children .) but he never missed any of us.
Before we went to sleep I can remember my Great Grandmother telling us a good night story, one I can still Remember......
Little boy kneels at the foot of the bed,
Droops on the little hands little gold head,
Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares!
Chritopher Robin is saying his prayers.
God bless mummy . I know that's '
Wasn't it fun in the bath to-night?
The cold's so cold, and the hot's so hot.
Oh! God bless Daddy-I quite forgot'
If I open my fingers a little bit more,
I can see Nanny's dressing-gown on the door,
It's a lovely blue, but it hasn't a hood,
Oh! God bless Nanny and make her good.
Oh! thank God ,for a lovely day.
And what was the other I had to say?
I said "bless Daddy" so what can it be?
Oh! Now I remember it , God bless me.

There is more but I cannot remember it.
Gone are those lovely days of the past, all that is left is memeries,
Reg.

What a very lovely memory Reg. I love that good night story. Thank God we still have our memories...hopefully more good than bad.

I am in the process of looking into my ancestry and have gotten back to the 1700's so far. I have found so much out about my family ... some good, some not so good, and lots that I just had no idea about.

Thanks for sharing your memory with us.
:ks:

Ahhh yes! and such lovely memories you have. I hope you have had someone record some of your memories for others to hear in the future. I did that with my mom and treasure it to this day. She was born in 1915, so had a good bit to share about life as she grew up.

Your description of the Christmas gathering is just beautiful. Brought up wonderful images from my own past, and the bedtime story is delightful.

thanks so much for sharing, Reg~ :ks:

I was born in 1933 and as a little girl I remember my mum reading that prayer to me.
I also remember from before the war, the rag and bone men coming round with goildfish and balloons in exchange for a few rags; the mussel man coming round with his barrow on Thursdays, hot cake man, scissor and knife harpening man and lots more. For 1/2 an old penny I could get a tramride three miles into town. Happy Days.

Hi Bobbiedazzler.
Thank you for those great memories of Hull. My Mother met my Father in Hull 1934 and I have a photo of father and me taken in Hull 1938, will send you the photo when I find it.
Reg.

This is a photo taken in summer 1936 when I was three. We were on a day out to Cleethorpes. To get there we had a ride on a ferry from Hull to New Holland across the Humber then a train to Cleethorpes. Look how my parents were dressed, you didn't see any bikinis or brief trunks in those days. :yah2: It was unusual to see dad without a tie, white silk scarf and bowler hat! He died when I was eight but I always remember him dressed up.

I remember all those, also The Good Ship's sailing down the Illyallyo (sp) and skipping in a long clothes line strung across the street to 'I am a Girl Guide Dressed in Blue' and other songs. Skipping singly it would be salt, mustard, vinegar, pepper, as we spun the rope faster. I played marbles too, with my step-brother and his friends, and hide and seek, hop-scotch. Children these days with their computers and electronic games are always complaining about being bored - we never were as there was so many games to play and exploring to do.

My late husband and I used to collect the old wooden toys from Nostalgia shops and my grandchildren enjoyed playing with a diabolo, woodpecker who taped his way down a stick, shuttlecocks and others. When I knew they were coming the computer was turned off and the toybox came out. They are all growing up now but a new generation is getting to know the old games.

There were other things less fun though, my mum used to dose me with a teaspoon of Virol (malt extract) each day which I liked and (ugh) a dose of syrup of figs every Friday night. I remember the Saturday morning matineé with hundreds of shrieking kids. The jeering and stamping of feet if the film broke. If we'd no money we could get in for a jam jar (worth 1/2d - the price to go in). We were never bored and enjoyed life.
